"Opener's" Rebids (the second bid)

If the responder changes suit this is a "forcing bid", so the opener must keep the auction going by bidding again. As the opening bidder ("opener") you have several choices:

  • Support "responder’s" suit if you can by bidding and raising their suit
  • It’s better to show a second suit of your own rather than rebidding your first suit (if you have another 4 card suit)
  • Rebid the first suit you bid
  • Bid notrumps (this will be covered in a later lesson)
